Therapy has not helped me accept myself yet. Is that normal?

asked by Devon · 9/25/2026 · 130 views · 2 answers

Three months in and I still leave sessions feeling worse. My therapist is fine about LGBTQ things, I think — I just do not know if I am doing it wrong. Do acceptance and self-compassion actually get easier?

Tell your therapist exactly what you wrote here: "I leave feeling worse." That sentence is the most useful thing they can hear, and good therapy can handle it. If they get defensive or sidestep it, that tells you something too — a modality switch or a new therapist is a legitimate move.

Three months is early, and self-acceptance rarely moves in a straight line — often it dips right before a breakthrough because you are finally touching the real material. Also consider a queer support group alongside individual therapy. Hearing other people say your exact fear out loud does something a one-to-one room sometimes cannot.
