How do I find a therapist who actually understands queer issues?

asked by Priya · 8/27/2026 · 95 views · 2 answers

I tried therapy once and spent the first three sessions explaining what bisexuality is. I left more exhausted than when I arrived. How do I find someone where that is not the whole agenda?

Screen them on the phone before you book. Two questions do most of the work:

  1. "What is your experience working with LGBTQ+ clients?"
  2. "Are you familiar with [whatever you actually want to work on — anxiety, family, transition]?"

A good therapist answers warmly and specifically. A mediocre one gets vague or defensive — that is your answer, hang up and dial the next one.

Directories with identity filters help (local LGBTQ+ center referrals are gold), but the phone test is better than any profile. And remember: the first session is an interview and you are the employer. If it is not a fit, you are allowed to leave — that is not failing at therapy, that is doing therapy correctly.

One reframe: "affirming" is the floor, not the ceiling. You are also allowed to want someone competent at the actual thing you came in for — grief, panic, work stress. The best fit is a therapist who gets your context and does not make your context the whole session.
