I feel completely alone in this. Is that normal?

asked by Alex · 9/29/2026 · 191 views · 2 answers

I have not told a single person. I go to work, come home, scroll through other people's lives, and feel like I am the only person carrying this. Everyone else seems to have people. Is this just what it feels like before things get better, or is this just what it feels like?

It is normal — probably the single most universal queer experience there is. Almost every one of us has had the version of this night: the ceiling, the phone, the feeling of being the only one.

Two things that are true at once:

  1. The loneliness is real and worth taking seriously. It is not a character flaw and it is not evidence that you are broken or unwantable. It is what happens when you carry something big alone.
  2. It shrinks with contact, not with shame. Not with "when I am ready" — that day never arrives on its own. One small connection a week: a message in a community group, one honest text to a safe friend, one event on the calendar.

You do not have to tell your whole story to take a first step. You just have to be in a room — physical or virtual — with one other person who gets it. That is how the ceiling nights end.

If the heaviness has been there most days for weeks, please talk to a professional as well as a community — a good therapist gives you a place to set it all down, and there is no prerequisite of being "far enough along" to deserve one. If you are in crisis, reach a local helpline tonight — you do not have to white-knuckle this part.
