My in-laws do not know about my past marriage to a woman. Do I tell them?

asked by Noor · 9/27/2026 · 113 views · 2 answers

My husband knows everything. His parents are warm but very curious and they keep asking about my "history". I do not want to lie, but this feels like it is his family too. Who decides this?

Decide together — a marriage history is shared information, not your secret alone. Agree on what you both say, and let him lead with his family if that is easier for everyone. What you should not do is improvise different versions in different rooms; inconsistency is what actually creates drama.

A simple "I was married to a woman before this" usually lands far more calmly than people expect. You can answer without a speech, a disclaimer, or a TED talk about labels. Brief and matter-of-fact gives them nothing to react against.
