Is it worth coming out if I am only going to date one person?
I have only ever been interested in one person so far, and they happen to be the same gender as me. Everyone keeps telling me I should come out, but it feels strange to make a whole announcement about something that might just be one relationship. Does coming out only matter when you are dating around?
Coming out is not about audience size, it is about not hiding. If staying private costs you nothing right now, that is completely valid — you do not owe anyone a performance. The question to ask is whether you would feel relief if the people around you just knew. If yes, tell the two or three people who matter first. If no, wait.
One relationship counts. I came out while dating exactly one person and people acted like I had joined a club with a membership drive. You are allowed to describe yourself on your own timeline, and one person is plenty of reason to start being honest if you want to be.
