How do I find a doctor who actually knows trans healthcare?

asked by Noor · 9/24/2026 · 107 views · 2 answers

My GP changes the subject whenever gender comes up and I do not know where to start. I want someone who has done this before, not someone who is learning on me. How do people find these doctors?

A practical search order that works:

  1. Ask a local LGBTQ+ center or community group — their referral list is the single best source; doctors get on it by actually being good.
  2. Call the clinic before booking and ask directly: "Do you have patients on hormone therapy? What does your process look like?" Confident answer = good sign. Hesitation = keep looking.
  3. Informed-consent clinics skip gatekeeping — they explain options, check bloodwork, and treat you like an adult.
  4. Red flags: requiring you to "prove" who you are, long mandatory psych referrals with no path, or refusing to use your name before you have any paperwork.

Also worth checking: does the front desk ask your pronouns at intake? Small signals predict big ones.

Reviews in trans forums and Reddit threads for your city are surprisingly accurate — search "informed consent + your city" and you will usually find current, specific experiences. Pharmacists are also underrated allies: they see which clinics send reliable prescriptions and will often tell you straight up.
