Lesbian

A woman who is attracted to other women. Lesbian identity encompasses romantic, emotional, and sexual attraction to women. Some non-binary people also identify as lesbians.

The term comes from the Greek island of Lesbos, home of the ancient poet Sappho, who wrote love poetry to women. Lesbian communities and culture have been an essential part of the LGBTQ+ movement since its earliest days.

Lesbians face both homophobia and sexism (often called lesbophobia), and lesbian spaces and history have sometimes been marginalized even within the broader LGBTQ+ community.
