Cisgender

A person whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth. If you were assigned female at birth and identify as a woman, you are cisgender (or "cis" for short).

The term comes from the Latin prefix "cis-" meaning "on this side of," as opposed to "trans-" meaning "across or beyond." It was coined to provide a neutral way to describe non-transgender people without implying that being trans is abnormal or that being cis is the default.

Cisgender is not a slur or an insult — it is a descriptive term, just like heterosexual. Being cisgender does not determine sexual orientation; cis people can be straight, gay, bisexual, or any other orientation.
