Deadname

The name a trans or non-binary person was given at birth and no longer uses. A deadname is often the name on old documents, school records, and family lists — a name that no longer matches the person's identity.

Using someone's deadname is called deadnaming, and it is harmful. Being called a deadname can trigger dysphoria, re-traumatize, and out a person who may not be out in that context.

When you learn a person's chosen name, use it consistently — including in places like email threads, introductions, and records. If you slip up, apologize briefly and move on without making a scene. Update written records when possible. Never share someone's deadname with others unless you have explicit permission.
