My girlfriend wants me to meet her family but she is not out to them yet. What do I do?

asked by Alex · 9/29/2026 · 174 views · 2 answers

I would be introduced as her "friend", and her parents are the kind who would ask questions. I do not want to pressure her, but playing invisible for a whole weekend feels awful. Has anyone navigated this?

Decide together what you can both live with, in advance. Agree on how you are introduced, what you will say if they ask, and an exit signal if it gets heavy. Her timeline still matters — but so does your dignity, and pretending to be "just a friend" is a cost that needs to be named, not assumed.

Meet them as the friend who is obviously important to her. Pressure rarely outpaces fear, but support often does — when she sees you handle the visit with grace, the next conversation about honesty gets a lot shorter.
