I am scared to go to the doctor because of how I look. How do I find a trans-friendly clinic?

Last visit the receptionist read my file out loud and the whole waiting room heard. I have put off checkups for two years. How do I find a place that will just treat me like anyone else?

Look for informed-consent clinics and queer community boards where people name both good and bad experiences — reputation travels fast in our communities. Before booking, call and ask one scripted question: "Do you see trans patients regularly?" Their tone answers more than their script does.

Send one email ahead of your appointment asking for a note on your file about your name and pronouns. It takes five minutes for them and it prevents the entire scene you are dreading. Ask for the appointment itself to be under your name too.
