How often should I actually get tested for STIs?
There is a lot of conflicting advice — after every partner, every few months, only if something feels wrong. I would like a schedule a normal person can keep, and I would like to stop feeling weird walking into the clinic.
A schedule most clinicians are happy with:
- New partner, or symptoms of any kind → test before or soon after.
- Otherwise, every 3–6 months if you are sexually active with more than one person. Put it in your calendar next to the dentist — same energy, no drama.
- Ask for the full panel, and mention what you actually do — throat and rectal swabs are part of the picture for many people, and most GPs only test one site unless you say so.
On the weirdness: clinics see dozens of people a day doing the exact responsible thing you are doing. Testing is the boring, normal part of having a sex life. The people who should feel awkward are the ones skipping it. Results are quick now, often a few days, and free or cheap at most sexual health services.
Make it a two-minute habit: book the next one while you are still in the waiting room. Momentum beats motivation, and the second visit is always easier than the first.
