PrEP

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis — a daily pill (or bimonthly injection) that prevents HIV infection when taken consistently. PrEP is highly effective: when taken as prescribed, it reduces the risk of HIV from sex by about 99%.

PrEP is available under brand names like Truvada and Descovy, and generic versions exist. It requires a prescription and regular HIV testing (every 3 months) while taking it. PrEP protects against HIV only — it does not prevent other STIs or pregnancy.

PrEP is recommended for anyone at higher risk of HIV, including men who have sex with men, trans women, people with HIV-positive partners, and people who inject drugs. Many LGBTQ+ health clinics and public health departments offer PrEP free or low-cost. In the US, online providers like Folx and Plume offer telehealth PrEP.
