U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)
A slogan from the HIV community: "Undetectable = Untransmittable." It summarizes the scientific consensus that a person living with HIV who has an undetectable viral load cannot pass HIV to sexual partners.
U=U was formalized in 2016 by the Prevention Access Campaign and is endorsed by the WHO, the CDC, and major HIV organizations worldwide. It has transformed HIV prevention and stigma: people with undetectable viral loads can have sex without fear of transmission.
U=U is important for queer communities because it fights HIV stigma, encourages testing and treatment, and affirms that people living with HIV are not dangerous. It is also a reminder that dating apps and communities should never exclude HIV-positive people.
