HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy)
Hormone Replacement Therapy — the use of estrogen or testosterone to align a person's physical body with their gender identity. HRT is a central part of gender-affirming care for many trans people, though not all trans people want or need it.
For transfeminine people, HRT typically involves estrogen and anti-androgens, producing effects like breast development, softer skin, fat redistribution, and reduced body hair. For transmasculine people, testosterone produces voice deepening, facial and body hair growth, fat redistribution, and muscle gain.
HRT is a gradual process — most changes appear over months to years. It should be supervised by a medical professional. Access varies by region: some places use informed consent, others require letters from mental health providers.
