How do I come out?
Short Answer
Coming out is the process of telling someone about your LGBTQ+ identity. There is no right or wrong way to do it, no required timeline, and you don't owe coming out to anyone.
Before You Come Out
- Safety first: If coming out could put you in danger — physically, financially, or emotionally — it is okay to wait. Your safety matters more than anyone else's knowledge.
- Start small: Consider telling one trusted person before coming out more widely. A close friend, a supportive sibling, or a counselor can help build your confidence.
- Have a support plan: Know who you can turn to if things don't go well. Line up a friend to call, a place to stay, or a counselor to talk to.
- You control the pace: Come out to who you want, when you want, how you want. There is no checklist you must complete.
How to Have the Conversation
- Choose the setting: A quiet, private, comfortable space. Not during an argument or a major family event.
- Be direct or ease in: Some people prefer a clear statement ("I'm gay" / "I'm transgender" / "I'm bisexual"). Others prefer to start with questions or feelings ("I've been thinking about my identity...").
- Give them time: The first reaction isn't always the final reaction. People may need time to process, especially if this is new information for them.
- Have resources ready: Some people respond better when they have information. You might share links, book recommendations, or suggest they learn on their own before asking you to educate them.
If It Doesn't Go Well
- It's not your fault: A negative reaction reflects the other person's limitations, not your worth.
- Reach out: Contact LGBTQ+ helplines, support groups, or trusted friends. You are not alone.
- Give it time: Some people come around after days, weeks, or years. But you are not obligated to wait for someone to accept you.
