Do I need a lawyer to change my gender marker?

asked by Sam · 9/26/2026 · 158 views · 2 answers

Some people say it is a form, others say hire a lawyer. My location makes it sound like both a medical exam and a court hearing. How do I find out what actually applies to me?

Rules differ by country, state, and even by which document you are updating — passport, ID, and birth certificate often have three separate processes. Start with a queer legal-service clinic; they will tell you in ten minutes what applies to you, and that answer beats any general blog post.

I got mine with just a doctor letter and a registry form — less dramatic than the internet promised. The requirements are usually published on the official registry page for your region; find that page, not a forum thread from 2019.
